Summary of Debate

Paper based books vs. electronic books was a heavily debated and heated conversation during Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2019. The affirmative team represented electronic books, while the affirmative team represented paper based books. The affirmative team discussed how books are a hazard to the environment because they waste trees, electronic books are easier to carry in tablets and phones, and the fact that it is within the UAE’s vision to become a paperless government by 2021. On the other hand, the competitive team argued that paper based books require a more sensory feel and that gives a better experience, phones and tablets are equally destructive to the environment because they have lithium batteries, paper based books ensure that writers get the money they deserve while it is easy to hack an online system, and finally that the UAE’s first and foremost strategy is to spread knowledge. The judges ruled in favor of tie for this debate, despite the fact that 64% of votes went to the paper based books team.
